Buddhist memorial service

About the memorial service-A memorial service for the deceased

  • The memorial service is a ceremony to pray for the deceased's soul and to comfort and memorialize the spirit.
In Buddhism, it is said that a person wanders between this world and this world for seven weeks after his death.
During this time, Emma Daio (king of hell) every 7 days, so a memorial service will be held so that the deceased can go to Sukhavati Jodo.
The memorial service that is held every 7 days after death until the 49th day is called the anniversary memorial service, and the 1st anniversary, 3rd anniversary, and 7th anniversary are called annual anniversary memorial services.

Anniversary memorial service

First seven days

  • This is the first memorial service to be held on the 7th day including the day of death.
A Buddhist priest will give a memorial service, and invited guests will be served vegetarian food.
Recently, it is common to move up on the spot after returning from the crematorium on the day of bone raising.
However, even in this case, on the real 7th day, let's not only the mourners but also the nearby people gather and give incense sticks to survive the deceased.

Thirty-five days

  • According to Buddhist teachings, the deceased is the day to be judged for the fifth time, which is the second most important anniversary after the 49th.
However, since it is close to the 49th day, the memorial service is often done only by the family and the monks read the sutras.

Forty-nine days

  • As the end of the anniversary, we will do it most grandly in the memorial service.
This day is an important day when the deceased will be given the Last Judgment and the fate of the other world will be decided.
Until then, the deceased was crossing the border between life and death, the so-called Sanzu-no-kawa River
It is 49 days to become a Buddha safely after the migration.
On this day, we invite close relatives and relatives to perform a bone-filling ceremony, return the mortuary tablets of Shiraki to the temple, and put the mortuary tablets of painting on the Buddhist altar.
Buddhist dishes are served to monks and those who witness the bone-filling ceremony.
Greetings for mourning and return of incense are generally held on the 49th.

Annual memorial service

  • The month when the deceased died is called Shogetsu, and the memorial service for the first death anniversary is held in Shogetsu the following year.
The following year, that is, the second year, was the third anniversary, and after that, the year of death was counted.
The 7th year is the 7th anniversary, followed by the 13th anniversary, the 17th anniversary, the 23rd anniversary, the 33rd anniversary, and the 50th anniversary.

Preparation of the memorial service

In general, the person who served as the mourner is often the owner.
