【What is Kiso Road (Nakasendo)? 】

  • Kiso is part of the Nakasendo, an important highway connecting Kyoto and Edo.
    The Nakasendo Road, which stretches approximately 540 km, has 69 post towns, 11 of which are located in Kiso region and are known as the "Eleven Post Towns Kiso."
    These post towns retain much of the atmosphere of the Edo period, with their cobblestone streets and wooden buildings beautifully preserved.
    Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku, in particular, are popular tourist destinations.

    Kiso was designated a Japan Heritage site in 2016 and is attracting attention as a valuable place where one can experience history and nature.
