  • ◆Tatsuzo Shimaoka(1919-2007)
After graduating from the Department of Ceramics at Tokyo Institute of Technology, he studied under Hamada Shoji and in 1953 opened a kiln in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, and became independent. He established his own unique Jomon inlay technique, in which he rolled the braided cords of his father, a braiding artist, onto the surface of a vessel and filled in the impressions with decorative clay, and was designated a Living National Treasure in 1996.Shimaoka Tatsuzo's Jomon works are not simply pressed with string, but rather the subtle misalignment of the lines created by twisting the string around gives the pieces a unique character.

    ◆What is "Irabo glaze"?
Irabo glaze is earth ash glaze(Dobaiyu)※It is a type of 1 and has been used in Goryeo tea bowls since ancient times.Irabo is the name of a type of Goryeo tea bowl. You can see the wabi-sabi appearance and simple glaze tones. It has a rough texture, and it is said that this roughness is what gives it the name Irabo, which is a reference to irritation. The color depends on the composition of the clay, but oxidation firing produces a yellowish-brown color, while reduction firing produces a dark brown color. This piece features a lot of glass beads, creating a style that harmonizes with the charm of Irabo.

※1. Earthen ash glaze is made from the ashes of burning tree branches, fallen leaves, and other miscellaneous wood.It does not contain any metals or other ingredients to produce color, so the finished color is pale.
