Oni no Shitaburui is a biotite granite area that has been eroded over many years by the torrent of the Oumagi River, a tributary of the Hii River, and is a V-shaped gorge stretching about 2 km, created by joints and potholes. The steep cliffs on the river bank, the huge rocks on the bottom of the valley and the erosion topography created by the flow of the river create a unique landscape, which has been designated as a national scenic spot and a natural monument.
In 2013, the 45m-high, 160m-long “Tsubaki” Koi “Suspension Bridge” and barrier-free promenade were fully opened. The entire road from the Une parking lot to the Shimotakao parking lot is wheelchair accessible.
It is said that a beautiful goddess named Tamahihime once lived in this land.A crocodile adored the goddess and came through it night after night, but the goddess hated it and blocked the river with a huge rock. After that, the crocodile fell in love with the princess even more intensely, and it is said that ``the crocodile adored'' changed to the name `` Oni no Shitaburui''.
