  • About ingredients ~ Japanese Spiny Lobster ~

Japanese Spiny Lobster, known as the king of the sea, have a spectacular drama before being cooked.

The life-threatening Japanese Spiny Lobster fishing begins in September...

    • What is fishing for the king of the sea Japanese Spiny Lobster?
In mid-September, Japanese Spiny Lobster fishing is allowed in Minami-Izu.
Japanese Spiny Lobster fishermen set out en masse to set Japanese Spiny Lobster nets on the rocky shores of Jiura.
Japanese Spiny Lobster fishing is scheduled from mid-September to mid-May of the following year.
Japanese Spiny Lobster live on rough rocks with a lot of seaweed and fast tides, and are nocturnal.
Fishermen set their nets in the evening, take them out before sunrise the next day, and remove Japanese Spiny Lobster at the port.
Japanese Spiny Lobster fishing is extremely difficult and can be said to be life-threatening.
    • Actual situation of Japanese Spiny Lobster fishing①
First of all, where Japanese Spiny Lobster is found, the roots of the ocean floor are intricately undulating and the tides are fast, making it extremely difficult to drop the net to the desired spot.
It takes a lot of skill just to maneuver the ship when it comes to getting close to a towering quay, navigating narrow rock passages, or when there are strong winds and waves.
On top of that, if you and the person casting the net don't get along with each other, you won't be able to accurately cast the net at the point you're aiming for.
Also, once the nets used for fishing Japanese Spiny Lobster are cast, they get caught in roots or pick up trash, causing them to tear quickly.
    • Actual situation of Japanese Spiny Lobster fishing ②
Japanese Spiny Lobster are nocturnal and dislike moonlight.
Therefore, Japanese Spiny Lobster fishing is closed for about 5 days before and after the full moon.
In the meantime, we will repair the torn net.
If you look at the fishermen warming their hands over a bonfire in the cold mid-winter while pulling Ise lobsters from their nets, you'll understand why Japanese Spiny Lobster are so expensive.
