      The "Takachiho Night Kagura," which has been passed down since the late Heian period, is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property that is performed all night long in 20 villages within the town from mid-November to February of the following year.

      This ceremony, in which thirty-three dances are performed to give thanks for the harvest from hunting and farming and to pray for a bountiful harvest in the following year, is not merely a performance, but a sacred religious event in which the gods are invited into the village.

      In particular, the dances based on the legend of Ama-no-Iwato are enveloped in the light of burning firewood in the darkness and the sounds of flutes and drums, creating an overwhelming sense of realism that transports the audience to the age of the gods.
