  • Shuzenji Temple Event Calendar

    • 【Setsubun Festival】
      Shuzenji Temple, located in the center of Shuzenji Onsen town, holds a Setsubun festival every year.
      On February 3rd, Setsubun, the oldest man and woman in Shuzenji Temple town receive a blessing from the head priest at the main hall of Shuzenji Temple, and then, from a tower set up in the temple grounds,
      People throw beans while shouting "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi" (Demons out, good fortune in) to drive away demons and pray for safety in the home and good health for the year.
      The shrine grounds are bustling with local residents and tourists who flock to the shrine in search of good fortune, cheering every time beans are thrown.

    • 【Shuzenji Temple Plum Grove】
      Shuzenji Temple Plum Grove is home to a mix of ancient trees over 100 years old and young trees around 30 years old.
      1,000 red and white plum trees of 20 varieties are planted, and the plum blossoms bloom in profusion across the 30,000m² hillside.

    • 【Cherry blossoms at Shuzenji Onsen】
      You can enjoy a variety of cherry blossoms all over the city, from early-blooming winter cherry blossoms, Kawazu cherry blossoms, and weeping cherry blossoms to the late-blooming double cherry blossoms and the small cherry blossoms of Mount Daruma.

        From the end of March to early April, the cherry blossoms in various parts of Shuzenji Temple reach their peak.
    • 【Spring Lantern Festival】
      A memorial service in which thousands of lanterns and flowers are offered to the Buddha.
      A procession carrying lanterns will walk from Tokko-no-Yu Park to the main hall of Shuzenji Temple.
      The hot spring town is enveloped in a fantastical atmosphere, illuminated by hundreds of candles.

    • 【Water-drawing ceremony】
      This is a festival of thanksgiving to Kobo Daishi, who discovered Tokko no Yu, the birthplace of Shuzenji Onsen, approximately 1,200 years ago, and to the hot springs.
      Approximately 30 girls selected from the city wore matching kimonos and had the monks draw hot water from the still-flowing "Tokko no Yu" spring.
      Approximately 250 people, including young children, collect the water in buckets and parade through the hot spring town, offering it to the tomb of Kobo Daishi at the main hall of Shuzenji Temple.

    • 【Firefly Evening】
      Fireflies, a seasonal sight in early summer, dance in the quiet nights of Shuzenji Temple.
      Enjoy the fantastic dance of tiny lights.
      They start flying around the end of May every year, but this varies from year to year depending on the weather and climate.
      The best time to see the flowers is around 8:00 p.m.

    • 【Shuzenji Temple Bon Dance】
      Generally, Obon falls from August 13th to 15th, but in Shuzenji Temple, Obon falls from August 1st to 3rd because this was once the busy season for silkworms.
      A tower is set up in the temple grounds, and many lanterns are lit up, and the sound of drums echoes along with the Bon Odori music.

    • 【Shuzenji Temple】
      The Shuzenji Temple Maple Festival is held to coincide with the autumn foliage of Shuzenji Temple Maple Forest, the only place Izu where maples grow in large numbers.
      At Shuzenji Temple Nature Park's maple forest, stalls selling local products will be set up, and at Niji no Sato you can enjoy the fantastical illumination of the autumn leaves.
