How to spend your time on Tokuno Island

The magnificent ocean and nature of the tropics

Tokuno Island is one of the remote islands belonging to the Amami Islands in the Nansei Islands, and consists of three towns: Tokuno Island Town, Isen Town, and Amagi Town.
The area is approximately 247.77 km2 and the circumference is approximately 80 km.It is located almost halfway between Kagoshima and Okinawa.
It is the 14th largest island in Japan and has a population of approximately 24,000.
Tokuno Island was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2021 and is currently attracting attention.

How to spend your time on Tokuno Island

Our lodge is adjacent to the inland sea, so you can enjoy playing on the rocks in the nearby sea.
You can experience something out of the ordinary by watching the sunset and relaxing in the nearby greenery.
Amagi Town Comprehensive Sports Park is nearby and can be used as a training camp site for track and field and baseball teams.
Tokuno Island does not have any large-scale resort facilities, but there is a lot of untouched natural scenery, so we took a tour around the island.It is also common for people to spend their time visiting traditional cultural facilities and strolling around nearby villages.

      About Tokuno Island

      Tokuno Island was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2021.
      Tokuno Island, like the Okinawa Islands, has a subtropical climate.
      It is warmer all year round than the mainland.
      Taking advantage of this warm climate, the island is a thriving agricultural region, focusing on sugar cane and livestock farming.
      In addition, there is a rich, untouched natural environment that has not been developed for tourism.
      It is also known as the habitat of the Amami rabbit, a national natural monument, and is attracting attention.

      Perfect fishing spot

      ●Inno(Utsumi)
      Ino (inland sea) is a fishing ground for gassei (sawtooth crab), istanaga (sweet shrimp), haenawa, line-fishing, and shigai (long-legged clown octopus).
      We recommend picking wild sea lettuce from mid-February to early May.

      ●Wookey(Offshore rocks)
      On the offshore rocks from the west to the north of the runway facing the open sea,
      This is a fishing ground for local fish by fishing or traps, as well as island octopus (ringed octopus), busa (shark-skinned octopus), spiny lobster (fishing is prohibited from May to August), green clams, tokobushi, and other fish and shellfish.
    • Avocet

      Ino (inland sea) is a paradise for wild birds

      At one time, storks and black-faced spoonbills made their home here and could be seen throughout the year, but
      The stork has gone away somewhere.
      Black-faced spoonbills and Eurasian spoonbills still occasionally visit the area.
      If you time it right, you can see it.
      Other species you can observe include egrets, little egrets, grey herons, black-and-white sandpipers, and curly-tailed godwits.

      In winter, migratory birds such as ducks and cormorants arrive, making the area very lively.
      Black-faced spoonbills often rest their wings at the river mouth nearby,

      This vast inland sea can be called a paradise for wild birds.
    • Tokuno Island Kotobuki Airport

      The Tokuno Island Kotobuki Airport Building is about a 10-minute drive from the guesthouse.
      The northern end of the runway is in sight.

      Tokunoshima Airport was opened on February 23, 1962.:The 1,080m runway was opened to the public as an off-airport for Toa Airlines.
      ・October 24, 1970 (1970):The administrator was changed from Toa Airlines to Kagoshima Prefecture.
      ・February 27, 1973:Class 3 airport government ordinance designation/June 1st:The runway was extended to 1,200m.
      ・June 1, 1980 (1980):The runway was extended to 2,000m, making it the first remote island airport in Kagoshima Prefecture to be equipped with jetliners.
      ・June 20, 2009:Daiichi Airlines launches Tokuno Island -Naha route on September 11th:The first international charter flight was operated by China Airlines to Taipei.
      ・February 26, 2012:To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the airport's opening, the airport was given the nickname "Tokuno Island Kotobuki Airport."

      Guest House Heiwanomorisou is located on the west side of Tokuno Island, facing the East China Sea, making it a great spot to watch the sunset on a clear day.

      On a fine day, you can watch the sun sink into the vast East China Sea on the west side of the site.
      It may be best to spend some time in peace and quiet.
    • Docking at Hetono Port"Nippon Maru"

      【Other port facilities】

      ●Kametoku Port
      Kametoku Port is a regional port located on the east coast of Tokuno Island and serves as the island's gateway.
      It is about 40 minutes by car from the guesthouse.

      ●Hetono Port
      It is the only port facility in Tokuno Island where cruise ships can dock.
      Luxury cruise ships such as Nippon Maru and Pacific Venus will be calling at the port.
      Approximately 10 minutes by car from the guesthouse.

      ●Matsubara Fishing Port
      It has been developed as a full-fledged fishing port in Amagi Town, and is also the fishing port where Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi's cruiser was moored.
      A commemorative monument has been set up in a corner of the port, and is visited by travelers.
      At the National Sports Festival to be held in October 2023, it will be used as the triathlon headquarters and swim venue.
      It is about a 5-minute drive from the guesthouse.

    • Sleeping Mountain

      It was named after the way it resembles a pregnant woman sleeping.

      You can see it through the trees from a corner of the guesthouse grounds,
      If you go down to Nishihama and look north, you can see Mt. Nesugata in an unobstructed environment.
      It used to be called Mount Gulliver, but nowadays it is more commonly called Nesugatayama.
      I believe that it has been watching over people's lives with its presence since ancient times.
    • The Megane Rock at In-no-Jofuta

      This coastal area facing the East China Sea offers a diverse range of scenery, including oddly shaped rocks, cliffs, caves, and beach rock formed by years of erosion of the uplifted coral reefs.
      You can enjoy a 360-degree view from the observation deck just next to the parking lot.Humpback whales migrate into the East China Sea to the west every year from December to March.To the north is Tokunoshima Airport and Nesugatayama, with a range of mountains running across the center of the island.Far to the south is Cape Inutabu, where the Battleship Yamato memorial tower is located.
      Follow the signboards down the promenade surrounded by subtropical plants towards the sea and you will come across Megane Rock.This is one of the strange rock formations created by many years of erosion of an uplifted coral reef.The two large caves look like glasses carved out of them, hence the name "Glasses Rock."

      The sea within the land.Deep inside, the largest underwater limestone cave in Japan was discovered.
      A full investigation is currently underway.

    • Aze Prince Beach Seaside Park

      A beautiful beach with blue water and white beaches that has been designated as part of the Amami Gunto National Park.

      It was named "Prince Beach" after the then Crown Prince and Crown Princess Michiko visited in 1972.
      A pure white beach that stretches for about 1.5km and a cobalt blue sea that stretches to the horizon.
      The area was recognized for its outstanding beauty and was designated as "Amami Gunto National Park" in 2017.

      Aze Prince Beach is perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
      Colorful fish swim in the clear waters, and if you're lucky, you might even encounter starfish bigger than the palm of your hand and seahorses.
      The naturally created gradation of blue ocean that can be seen from the observation deck within the park is a magnificent sight.

      Yonama Beach

      It is about a 10-minute drive from the guesthouse.
      Even small children can play safely on the pure white sandy beach and clear blue sea.
      Just staring out at the ocean is soothing.
      The facility also features a freshwater pool and shower rooms.
      The Amagi B&G Marine Center facility also offers yacht and canoe rentals, and we look forward to welcoming visitors in an environment that can be enjoyed by both adults and children.

    • Triathlon in Tokuno Island

      Amagi Town Comprehensive Sports Park

      This is a fully-fledged urban sports park facility, and is equipped with a baseball field, athletics stadium, tennis courts, indoor gateball court, gymnasium (large hall, martial arts hall, training room), indoor pool, and outdoor children's playground.
      A triathlon is held here every year.

    • Amagi Cross Country course

      The cross-country course, supervised by the late Yoshio Koide, is used as a place to promote the health of local residents and as a training facility for corporate track and field teams in the winter.
      The tournament is held every February.
    • Tokunoshima Nakusamikan Bullfighting Tournament

      This is a facility that disseminates information on Tokuno Island's local culture.
      Bullfighting competitions are held in a roofed, all-weather dome.
      The sight of the cows crashing into each other is very impressive.
    • Prince Beach "Brown Sugar Festival"

      This event is held every May in the multipurpose plaza within the park, showcasing the traditional art of brown sugar making.
      The traditional method of making brown sugar using cows and a satagumma (sugar cart) is reproduced here.
