      Kitayamazaki

      The dynamic coastline stretches for approximately 8km, with cliffs 200m high, strangely shaped rocks, and sea caves of various sizes.
      In spring you can feel the breath of nature, in summer the sea is sometimes hazy, in autumn you can see the beautiful autumn leaves, and in snowy landscapes that look like ink paintings.
      Kitayamazaki is always attractive, is a scenic spot rated as a special A-class with the highest rank in the "Natural Resources/Coasts Category" by the (Public interest incorporated foundation) Japan Travel Bureau Foundation, a National Tourism Resource Evaluation.
      The view from the observatory that protrudes into the sea is breathtaking.
      Behind the visitor center is a walking course in which alpine plants, white rhododendrons, gather and bloom beautiful white flowers from early June to early July.

      Unosu Cliff

      It was named because there is a sea nest on the cliffside.
      Located on the southern coast of Tanohata, it features an overwhelmingly high cliff.
      If you look north from the observatory about 500m away from the parking lot, you can see the 200m-high cliffs lined up in five rows like a folding screen.
      The leaves are cool green in summer and brightly colored in autumn.
      The ocean underneath is marine blue with an emerald color.
      You can see the white beach and attract travelers.
      In the midst of the pine forest lies a literary monument inspired by the cliffs where cormorants nest, commemorating Yoshimura Akira's award-winning work "Journey to the Stars" recipient of the Dazai Osamu Prize. Alongside an excerpt from the piece, it expresses the author's sentiments towards the village of Tanohata.

      Kitayamazaki Cliff Cruise

      Kitayamazaki called "Sea Alps" from the sea side.

      Tsukuehama Banya-gun (Fisherman's Huts)

      22 wooden guard houses, 100 meters away from the coast of the Tsukuehama Fishing Port.
      There are living spaces such as workshops, fishing gear storage, and soil as fishing bases.
      It was rebuilt after the Sanriku Tsunami in 1933, and was used by local fishermen to prepare for fishing trips and to ship farmed seaweed.
      It gained a reputation for its original fishing village scenery and was selected in 2006 as one of the "100 Cultural Properties of Fishing Villages History and Culture to be Preserved for the Future."
      Unfortunately, it was lost in the massive tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. However, thanks to the support of many people, it has been reconstructed to restore its previous appearance.
      Currently, it is a base for various sightseeing trips such as salt making experience, Banya fisherman guide, Banya cooking experience.

      Sappa Boat Adventures

      An exhilarating cruise where you can take a small boat through the strangely shaped rocks and rock caves of Kitayamazaki.

      Tanohata Village Folk Museum

      It was built to commemorate the “Tanohata Village Enforcement 101 Years Festival”.
      Exhibiting materials from “Sanhei Ikki (sanhei rebellion)”, one of the largest farmers in Japan that occurred a few decades ago.
      There is a monument near the entrance with a flame design symbolizing the uprising, and the cultural heritage related to the uprising is recreated using paper cutouts to allow visitors to experience the beginning and end of the uprising.

      Earthquake remains"Aketo Coastal Seawall"

      The seawall that was destroyed by the tsunami is preserved as it was at the time of the disaster.
      A commentary board using photographs taken before and after the disaster and at the moment of the breach is provided on the tour route, allowing you to experience the destructive power of the tsunami and the disaster at that time. Its use is expected to raise awareness.
      In addition, local resident guides are offering storytelling (guide) programs about the tsunami experience at the ruined facilities and surrounding disaster-stricken areas.

      Mallet Golf Course

      Mallet is a mallet.
      This golf uses a dedicated stick and ball, much like a gateball stick.
      It is a game very similar to golf that competes with a small number of strokes from a fixed place to a cup.
      Disaster restoration work on Mallet Golf Course in Aketo District, which was washed away by Great East Japan Earthquake, has been completed and operations have resumed on June 8, 2014.

  • Sanriku Railway Rias Line

    • Japan's longest Third Sector Railway

      In the Great East Japan Earthquake, the North Rias Line and South Rias Line were affected, and full restoration was completed in 2014.

      On March 23, 2019, we took over the Miyako - Kamaishi section of JR Yamada Line, which had been suspended since Great East Japan Earthquake, and connected 163km from Kuji to Sakari (Ofunato).

      It suffered severe damage from the heavy rains of Typhoon No. 19 in October 2019, and service was suspended in some sections, but it was fully restored on March 20, 2020. 

      The nearest station to this facility is Tanohata Station.It is about 10 minutes on foot and about 3 minutes by car.
      Free transfer is possible if you contact us in advance.
      The closest station to the sightseeing boat is Shimanokoshi Station.About 10 minutes on foot from the pier.

      Ryusen-do Cave

      Iwaizumi Town is a town blessed with rich forests and clean water.
      Within the area, Ryusen-do Cave is one of Japan's three major limestone caves.

      Kuji Amber Museum

      Japan's only Amber Museum surrounded by green forest.

      Japan's first underground aquarium using the tunnel of Kuji National Oil Storage Base.

      Kumanohana Observatory

      Sannoiwa

      Kamaishi Daikannon

      A 48.5m tall pure Statue of Gyoran Kannon of Kannon overlooking Kamaishi Bay.
      Its official name is Sekio-zenji Temple Kamaishi Daikannon, and it was dedicated in 1970 to pray for people's happiness and world peace.
      The inside is divided into 13 floors, with a main hall and a room housing thirty-three Kannon statues. From the observation decks on the 11th and 12th floors, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the beautiful scenery of Kamaishi Bay.

    • Great East Japan Earthquake Tsunami Tradition Hall

      It is established within the Government-managed Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park.
      About 150 earthquake materials are exhibited in the facility, and the threat of the tsunami is communicated through relics, images, and testimony of victims, and lessons are widely disseminated.
      Some parts of the fire truck from the Tanohata Village Fire Brigade, washed away by the tsunami, and a portion of the beam of the Kesen Ohashi Bridge over the Kesen River mouth, are on display.
      To prevent the recurrence of the tragedy of the tsunami from the Great East Japan Earthquake, this facility aims to pass on the facts and lessons of the disaster to future generations. It also seeks to showcase the reconstruction efforts to people both domestically and internationally, expressing gratitude to all those who provided support.
      Admission is free, so you can use it as a place to learn about earthquakes and disaster prevention, as well as during sightseeing gaps.

      Koiwai Farm

      Chusonji Temple

      It is said that Chūson-ji Temple began with the establishment of a temple called Kōdaiju-in by the prominent Tendai Buddhist monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin in the third year of the Kashō era.
      Hiraizumi, where Fujiwara no Kiyohira, the first generation of the Fujiwara clan, erected numerous temple buildings of S(h)akyamuni dedicated to comforting the spirits of both allies and enemies who perished in the Former Nine Years' War and the Later Three Years' War.
      Unfortunately, many of the halls and pagodas were destroyed by fire in the 14th century, but Sankonzo, including Chusonji Temple's Konjiki-do, is home to over 3,000 national treasures and important cultural properties.

      Geibi Gorge (Geibikei)

      A stunning canyon formed by the erosion of limestone by the Satetsu River, with approximately 100 meters of cliffs on both sides.
      You can enjoy the scenery of the four seasons while entrusting yourself to the boat ride: wisteria in the spring, deep greenery in the summer, red leaves in the fall, and snowy scenery (on a houseboat) in the winter.
