Hoshitate Support Project
- The ancient settlement of "Hoshitate" on Iriomote Island is a village with a rice-growing culture.
Most of the local events are Shinto ceremonies centered around rice cultivation.
This is an area that has inherited an important lifestyle and culture that continues to this day, where people pray for the rice seeds to germinate and grow, celebrate and give thanks for the harvest, and pray for another good harvest next year.
At Honen Festival (harvest festival), a large rope is made using rice straw from the rice fields of Hoshitate Village and a tug-of-war is held.
Additionally, a research study by Tokyo University of Agriculture found that as a result of traditional rice farming and the continued use of no pesticides, rare plants can be found nowhere else in Japan.
However, the number of people who can make them is decreasing, and it is becoming difficult to continue doing everything by hand the traditional way.
Therefore, Irunty Futademura decided to provide the support necessary to continue this culture and way of life.
A natural environment where rare plants live
A life with continuing traditions and culture
In order to continue this, Irunty Futademura launched the "Iriomote Island Hoshitate Village Hometown Rice Field Regeneration Project" as part of the "Hoshitate Support Project".
The project will also receive cooperation from the Laboratory of Plant Symbiosis, Faculty of Agriculture, Tokyo University of Agriculture, and support from the World Wide Fund for Nature Japan (WWF Japan), a public interest incorporated foundation.
A small village with big ambitions,
Thank you for your support.
