About the Hoshitate Settlement

Living with nature is still very much alive in the Hoshitate Settlement, so you can find a true island life.

Hoshitate in the western part of Iriomote Island is one of the oldest settlements.
About 100 people live in a rich natural area surrounded by mountains, the sea and rivers.
The good old Mt Yae still lives here.
Traditional Shinto gratitude for living with nature and nature that brings happiness, and the hearts of the people who cooperate to support the region ―――
If you walk in the village, you will be able to see the charm of such Hoshitate living.
  • A village where the archetypal scenery of Mt Yae remains

    There is a Hoshitate Settlement on a flat land surrounded by mountains from north to east, rivers to the south, and the sea to the west.
    You can see the scenery that was once everywhere in Mt Yae, such as a mansion surrounded by windbreaks, a row of Fukugi and Yarab trees and a stone wall of coral, everywhere you walk through the Hoshitate Settlement.
    If you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of birds, insects, or the wind.The tranquility unrelated to the hustle and bustle of the city spreads through.
  • Living with nature

    The lifestyle that people receive various blessings of nature, given by the sea, mountains and rivers according to the season, is the basis of the current living in the Hoshitate Settlement.
    Also, although it is not well known, Iriomote Island is an island of rice culture.
    At the same time as enjoying the bounty of nature, rice farming used to be the center of our lives.
    Many of the traditional Shinto Hoshitate that have been passed down to the drylands have been built on the roots of rice cultivation.
    Rice fields are still spreading around the village.
  • Inherit traditional traditions

    In the village continued for a long time among the Iriomote Island, 1605 years of Keicho Kenchi its name has been written Hoshitate has inherited a variety of traditional ones.
    In the life of a village that has lived with nature, it is important to appreciate nature.
    There are nine Shinto events a year. In particular, three major events such as Yuningai Festival, Honen Festival (harvest festival) and Shichi Festival are large-scale events in which all the members of the public hall are involved.
    The biggest Shinto ritual of the year, "Shichi Festival, " is designated as National Important Intangible Cultural Property

    The Hoshitate Settlement has been in continuous use for hundreds of years, is still a living place where about 100 people still live.
    We hope that this life will continue for 100 years.

      ●Quietness is one of the attractions of the village.Please consider the sound around you.
